Tolerance is a way of expressing oneself in allowing others to say and do things that people like without being disturbed. Tolerance needs to be applied to everyday life, especially on campus. Tolerance is to respect the rights of other people who have ideas and values that do not match a person's own ideas and values (Kele, 1995: 73). Wilson (1991) defines tolerance as allowing many ideas that could be different to be expressed and as approaching other people within a worldwide goal, being self-govering of value differences. When someone arrives on a campus, he/she is likely to encounter students who have different perspectives, lifestyles, and values than others. Practiced tolerance will result in a better attitude. Tolerance on campus is crucial to respecting each other.
There are many reasons why tolerance on campus is crucial. The first reason is tolerance can make respect for others' decisions. Research shows that not everyone has the same opinion or perspective as other people. Someone should be able to make whatever decision that people make. Everyone has a right to feel safe and comfortable on a campus, but not all people are respectful of other decisions. If someone disagrees with the decision about perspective from the others, there is no problem, because everyone is allowed to have a perspective that is different from the other sides. Besides, as long as the decisions are good and not disturbing to each other, there is also no problem. Secondly, the reason is tolerance can keep other people’s feelings towards each other. When someone can keep the feeling of others, it will make others do the same things with him/herself. By it all, on a campus it would make a person comfortable being friends with each other. In this case, these whole reasons are the key to crucial tolerance on a campus.
There are many kinds of tolerance that are crucial on campus. The first kind is religion. (Hurtado & Harper, 2007; Mayhew et al., 2016), research on how religion influences campus climate. The reason is because if someone is on a campus, maybe everyone will find some of her/his friends have different religions than others itself. Everyone doesn’t have to be surprised and please don’t judge them, because it’s their choice. The second is racism. According to some research, it has focused on understanding the campus climate for racial and ethnic minorities. When someone has a friend whose skin color is different from others, someone doesn’t have to judge and discriminate against them. Actually, discriminating against any student on the basis of race or ethnicity is a bad attitude inside the campus. The third kind is disability. On a campus, everyone will find people that have disability, whether physical or mental. Someone should respect and not judge anything else. Typically, people with disabilities can do things for themselves and want to be treated normally by their peers and lecturers. Everyone should support them, because they only need support from people around their side. They don’t need some critics or judges, but only support. The last kind is socioeconomic status. Everyone has a socio economic status that is different for others. Despite their differences in socioeconomic status, it’s not being different from each other. Students who have low socio economic status don’t necessarily mean that they are underrated and vice versa, too. They are all in the same position. There is no difference and no discrimination. All these kinds have demonstrated the crucial tolerance within the campus.
In summary, that’s all the reasons why tolerance on campus is crucial. Tolerance can make someone respect each other and make more understanding about the circumstances of others. Besides, there are many kinds of tolerance that are crucial in campus, such as religion, racism or ethnic, disability, socioeconomic status, etc. Everyone doesn’t have to discriminate and doesn’t judge people who have different perspectives than others. In addition, everyone needs some support and tolerance from each other. In this case, it can make life better. So, tolerance on campus is crucial because it can keep other people’s feelings to each other.
